Productivity gains from collaborative working can be substantial, and in many industries that have been using collaboration tools for some time, working without them is impossible, especially for industries that rely heavily on research or out sourcing. Indeed, the knowledge economy is based on collaboration. But collaboration can also leave organisations exposed, as the chain of knowledge partners becomes longer and more complex. It can be difficult to know how far you can trust the person/organisation you are collaborating with or how they are securing the data that you are sharing with them. When this collaboration involves key future products of the company, as is the case in many industries including defence, pharmaceuticals and software then securing and controlling who has access to the data can destroy the share price, or even mean the survival of the business.
