How BUPA Developed & Deployed Their Award Winning “Data Matters.....Security Matters” Information Security Awareness Programme

This detailed and insightful case study presentation, delivered by Bupa’s UK Security Manager, Phil Hunt, will describe the objectives, development and deployment of Bupa’s UK Information Security Awareness Programme entitled “Data Matters.....Security Matters”. BUPA realise that the fundamental weakness in any information security initiative is the human factor; over 70% of security breaches are internal and accidental. Phil will describe how BUPA met the objective of their recent initiative to address this weakness by developing and deploying an Information Security Awareness Programme to all BUPA staff, whether they were senior management, technical development personnel, mobile computing users or general office staff. The purpose of this programme was to make people “stop and think” before doing anything which could compromise BUPA information. Phil will also describe how BUPA took policies as dry, isolated documents and embedded them into the endemic business culture.

The ‘Data Matters…Security Matters’ project was named “Best Security Education Programme” at the Real IT Awards 2009, in London in November. The team saw off fierce competition from a number of large organisations such as Barclays and British Airways to land the award for its campaign, which judges said demonstrated ‘an innovative approach to an often overlooked area’.
