Ever since the personal computer emerged to challenge the paradigm of centralized, data center based computing, IT departments have struggled to reconcile end-user productivity and morale against needs to rationally manage IT investments across the enterprise. Meanwhile, the explosive growth of the Internet and the rise of mobile computing have strengthened centrifugal forces pulling against centralization. To exacerbate matters, a new class of hackers and cyber criminals have demonstrated rapidly advancing abilities to grossly interfere with the process of IT-led value generation. Thus the dilemma remains: How does one protect the macro interests of the enterprise while enabling inherently individualistic end-users to maximize their productivity? The author proposes that IT organizations are best served by anticipating and “gowing with the flow” of increasingly distributed and mobile computing to create policies, practices, and processes that optimize security, legal/regulatory/stewardship compliance, and return on investment while enabling end-users to follow their bliss and do productive work any time, any where on any device capable of interacting with enterprise information resources. The good news is that new technologies have emerged to radically improve IT organizations abilities to see and manage distributed computing devices at lower costs and higher levels of effectiveness. Whether short-to-medium macroeconomic conditions improve or not, the author views 2010 is an opportunity to implement the policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure that IT and information security professionals are not only aligned with business objectives but enable near term success and long term growth.
