At the end of 2012, financially motivated cybercriminals fueled by Web browser exploit kits and focused to attack equally on large corporations and Social Media networks continued to occur.

Companies are faced with a constantly evolving threat landscape, with emerging technologies making it increasingly difficult to manage and secure confidential data.  A security breach--whether from an outside attacker or an insider--can impact brand reputation, shareholder value, and expose confidential information.

The X-Force 2012 Trend and Risk Report discusses varying levels of attacker sophistication from hacktivism, financially motivated efforts, to increased public announcements of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). Through Social Media networks, attackers are now more than ever, capable of viewing enterprises as a collection of personalities and have routes into the enterprise infrastructure by targeting employees through their personal and professional social profiles. Adoption of new mobile strategies within the organization and the focused attention towards security, lead IBM Security to recently predict that mobile computing devices should be more secure than traditional user computing devices by 2014.
